Supporting the Future of Para-Sports

In early 2023, the Finnish Paralympic Committee faced a significant financial challenge when they lost a crucial government grant, which typically covered over 60% of their budget. This left essential programs for disabled children and young athletes at risk. In response, the ”World’s Most Valuable Jersey” campaign was launched to address the funding gap and ensure the continuity of these programs.

Louhento Foundation’s Contribution

The Louhento Foundation made a key contribution of €100,000 to the campaign, supporting initiatives that guarantee children and young people with disabilities can access sports and physical activities. This donation was instrumental in sustaining vital programs like the Valtti Program, which introduces disabled youth to various sports, and Special Olympics, which provides competitive opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Mariet Louhento, Chairperson of the Louhento Foundation, expressed: ”Louhento Foundation shares the same values as the Finnish Paralympic Committee. Responsibility is at the core of everything we do, and we are committed to helping create a more inclusive, just, and active society.”

Campaign Success

The campaign exceeded its expectations, raising €447,000 by the end of 2023. Funds raised ensured the continuation of essential sports programs for disabled children and young athletes. Over 1,700 private donors and 70 organisations participated, and the campaign achieved widespread visibility across media channels, reaching approximately 13% of Finnish Instagram users.

The increased awareness and support also enabled the Finnish Paralympic Committee to strengthen its partnerships and gain further support from existing corporate sponsors.

The Long-Term Impact

Timo Mäkynen, Partnerships Manager at the Finnish Paralympic Committee, commented: ”The support from the Louhento Foundation was crucial. Not only did the campaign provide immediate financial assistance, but it also brought increased attention to the inclusion of people with disabilities in sports. This visibility will help us build stronger partnerships for the future.”
